CARMEL, Ind. – Merchants Bank of Indiana and subsidiary Merchants Capital announce today the donation of backpacks and school supplies to families who reside at Braeburn Village Apartments. The apartments are located on the east side of Indianapolis and are a Merchants Affordable Housing property.

The inaugural Back-to-School Backpack Bash invited residents of Braeburn Village Apartments to join together for food, games and celebration ahead of the new school year. On July 27, more than 280 backpacks full of school supplies – including notebook paper, pencils, glue sticks, erasers, spiral notebooks, pencil sharpeners, pens, highlighters, folders and more – were donated as part of Merchants MPACT program. The donation was valued at more than $5,300.

Merchants MPACT program was launched in 2018 to foster and support the corporate initiative of Positively Advancing Communities Together through employee volunteer service hours. The program is focused on advancing affordable housing, connecting people in their communities, promoting and improving education and financial literacy and stimulating economic development within local communities.

“Caring for our community is an important part of what we do,” said Michael F. Petrie, chairman and CEO of Merchants Bank of Indiana. “We’re thankful for the opportunity to impact the lives of these children and their parents by easing the financial burden of back-to-school shopping, while also setting them up for a successful start to another school year.”

Nearly 15 employees from Merchants Bank and Merchants Capital gathered together on July 23 to prep backpacks and fill them with supplies ahead of the giveaway.
